Twyford waterworks open day

Twyford waterworks open day

Our first actual outing this year was to attend the first open day of the season at Twyford Waterworks, held on Sunday May 7th. This working museum is run by volunteers who maintain and demonstrate various pumping engines, both steam and diesel, although at the moment the steam engines are unable to be run due to maintenance works. The open day made a convenient stop off on our way to the Bill Targett Rally at Colden Common, 3 miles up the road and turned out to be a very enjoyable day.

We arrived on the Sunday morning and proceeded to clean up Victoria ready for her public and while doing this watched other exhibits arrive. There were 6 full sized steamers, two rollers, two steam tractors and two traction engines, all parked in the old chalk quarry at the rear of the waterworks which were very pleasant surroundings. Other vintage vehicles, models and items of interest were displayed around the site made all the more attractive by the beautiful weather. As space was quite limited, it was a sitting around day and the only time that we moved was to get water but this was not a problem. The staff were very friendly and helpful and a good time was had by all. The waterworks have several open days during the year and it is worth a visit, especially when they get the steam engines working again, we can only wish them good luck in their endeavours.
