Steam rallies, what is it we want?

Steam rallies, what is it we want?

We increasingly find ourselves visiting steam rallies and vintage shows and saying things like “They are not as good as they used to be”, or “it was better ten years or so ago before it became this big”, so what is it we all want from our hobby?

What makes a good steam rally? Is it the number of engines? The number of vehicles? The venue? Does it make a difference whether the engines are able to move around the site or not? Do people want huge markets and a great selection of fast food outlets?

From our point of view, as exhibitors, we want a relaxed atmosphere with space to play, reasonable facilities in the way of toilets, water etc and not too much red tape and over organisation. There is nothing worse then being told where you can park to the nearest inch then what you can and cannot do every hour of the day, we are all grown ups after all!

As visitors, we want a good selection of exhibits, some stalls and things to watch in the arena, that’s all.

What do you think? What is it that you want as either visitors or exhibitors? People might argue that ‘big is beautiful’, we don’t think so…..what about you?
