Chronology of Engines owned by W. Seward and Son

This list shows the chronological use of the steam engines owned by W. Seward and Son, Petersfield. From the initially purchase in 1886 of the Marshall 14242 (now called Victoria, Empress of India) to the high point of the firm from 1911 through to 1917, when there were 9 engines of various types being employed for tasks covering Road Haulage, Farm work and Road Rolling. Though the success of the firm can’t be measured purely by the number of engines owned at any one time, it is however, indicative of the steady growth and evolution/diversification to its peek, followed by the gradual demise of the business through the 1920s and 30s.

A savage centre engine (No. 722) was removed from a set of gallopers purchased by James Noyce in the mid 1950s and was kept in the Chapel Street works until its closure in 1969.
